Crossways Cottage, Symonds Yat, is in the heart of the stunning Wye Valley, Herefordshire, to the west of the Cotswolds, on the Gloucestershire and Wales borders. Just a few minutes walk from the river, it is the perfect base for a break away. With excellent outdoor activities on the doorstep, bikers, hikers, ramblers and even just amblers have a wealth of choice of things to do. Canoeing, kayaking and SUP are particularly well catered for, and when the river is safe there are swim-spots to cool off in. We even have gorging, archery and axe-throwing all within easy walking distance, if that appeals! Walking holidays are catered for all year round, with flat and hilly, riverside track and woodland routes with access to some of the most beautiful viewpoints in the UK.

Within 10 minutes walk there are 4 village pubs - make that 5 if you fancy a trip on one of the ancient hand ferries to The Saracen's Head, over the river in Symonds Yat East. Most of the pubs sell very good food, and there are other eateries all within walking distance, and many more very good country pubs a short drive away.

Only slightly further afield are the quaint towns of Monmouth (5 miles) and Ross-on-Wye (7 miles) both with good independent shops and amenities. The Forest of Dean offers lots of opportunity for rainy day activities and historical insights into its industrial past, which is very evident from the endless industrial archaeology throughout the forest. Locally, there are distilleries and vineyards galore, and being home to so many orchards, we are also near the Wye Valley Cider Route! This beautiful area really does have so much to offer for a short or extended break catering for all tastes and activity levels. It has the esteemed title of being the Birthplace of British Tourism and really does deserve that accolade.
